According to the National Family Health Survey 2019-5 (2019 – 2021), Goa is the state with the highest percentage of households owning a car in India, while it leads the list with the highest percentage of two-wheelers per household. As per the data, 45.2% of Goa households had a registered car between 2019-2021 (survey period) – almost double that of any other state in the country.
Meanwhile, the northeastern states also flourished in the list, registering higher numbers collectively. States such as Nagaland (21.3%) and Sikkim (20.9%) actually have a higher percentage of cars per household than Delhi, which has 19.4% in the capital. Apart from Goa and Nagaland, Kerala (24.2%), Jammu and Kashmir (23.7%), Himachal Pradesh (22.1%), and Punjab (21.9%) were the remaining other states in India where more than 20% of households owned a car.
