Automakers are rushing to fill their lineups with SUVs, and as a result the subcompact SUV class has grown significantly. Even though most subcompact SUVs don’t have as much passenger space as your typical small car—and many of them even have less cargo space—they do have a higher seating position, a more rugged look, and available all- Wheel drives are what many buyers want at a relatively affordable price.
So it probably shouldn’t come as a surprise that all 10 models on our affordable SUV list are subcompact. They are ordered by base price, from least to most expensive, and all prices include the SUV’s destination fee, but no cash incentives or taxes. The prices and the EPA’s combined fuel economy estimates are for the front-wheel-drive versions of all SUVs except the Kia Seltos, which comes with all-wheel drive on its base (LX) trim level, and the Subaru Crosstrk, which comes with AWD. Comes standard with . on all trims. An automatic transmission is also included in all prices.
Affordable subcompacts like the Nissan Kicks and Hyundai Venue may look like other subcompact SUVs and are marketed as such, but they don’t offer AWD, the availability of which we needed to make this list. (You can find a spot in our companion list, The 10 Cheapest Cars You Can Buy Right Now.) Adding AWD to most of the SUVs below costs around $1,500-$2,000.
1. Hyundai Kona SE
Hyundai updated the Kona for 2022 with new styling, more room and better technology, and it takes the top spot on the list – even with the 2021 model’s price hiked. The standard continuously variable automatic transmission of the 2022 SE replaces the six-speed automatic; The new CVT pairs well with Hyundai’s 147-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive, good for a combined EPA rating of 32 mpg, up from 30 mpg for 2021. The 2022 Kona gets an 8- or even 10.25-. inch dashboard touchscreen. Automatic emergency braking, hands-on lane centering, Apple Car Play and Android Auto are standard across the board, and the 8-inch display includes wireless connectivity. Hyundai’s Highway Driving Assist, which combines a more advanced lane with adaptive cruise control, is optional.

2. Chevrolet Trax LS
The Trax is one of two subcompact SUVs sold by Chevrolet, along with the new Trailblazer listed below. The Trax is slightly smaller than the Trailblazer and doesn’t have much cargo space. Power comes from a turbocharged four-cylinder instead of the Trailblazer’s turbo three-cylinder, and the Trax’s engine works with a conventional stepped automatic transmission. With the Trailblazer’s L trim missing for 2022, the old Trax is once again Chevy’s least expensive SUV. You’ll pay for it’s lack of safety features, however, as automatic emergency braking is unavailable on any trim.
3. Mitsubishi Outlander Sport S
With a design that dates back to the 2011 model year, the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport was one of the early subcompact SUVs on that market, and is one of the most affordable. Mitsubishi has updated the SUV over the years, but its vintage interiors and unsophisticated maneuverability are showing its age. For 2021, Mitsubishi added important safety features such as automatic emergency braking with automatic high beam, lane departure warning and pedestrian detection to all trims of the Outlander Sport.
4. Chevrolet Trailblazer LS
The Chevrolet Trailblazer subcompact SUV was new for 2021. For 2022, the hard-to-find L trim level has been dropped; The base trim level is now the FWD LS, powered by a 137-hp, turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine that works with a CVT. Despite being only $200 more than the base price Trax, the larger Trailblazer comes standard with useful tech features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, and important active-safety features including automatic emergency braking with steering assist and lane departure warning.
5. Honda HR-V LX
6. Toyota Corolla Cross L
The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is a new subcompact SUV that slots between the quirky C-HR and larger RAV4 in Toyota’s lineup. As its name implies, the Corolla Cross shares a platform and powertrain with the popular Corolla compact car. That powertrain, a 169-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and CVT, is rated at 32 mpg with the base Corolla Cross L’s standard FWD. Apple Car Play and Android Auto are standard, as are advanced safety features like forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. We like the Corolla Cross’ standard features and available AWD, but power is modest for both city and highway driving.

7. Kia Seltos LX
8. Volkswagen Taos S
Like the Corolla Cross, the Volkswagen Taos is also new for 2022. Power comes from a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 158 hp. With FWD, the engine is paired to a traditional eight-speed automatic and rated at 31 mpg combined; optional AWD swaps the eight-speed for a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The base trim is sparsely equipped, lacking important features like automatic emergency braking or Apple Car Play and Android Auto.
9. Jeep Renegade Sport
The Jeep Renegade wears signature design elements of the American off-road brand, such as round headlights and a seven-slot grille, but it hails from Italy and shares its platform with a Fiat model. (Stellantis, an automaker with multinational roots, operates both brands.) The base Renegade Sport is powered by a 177-hp, turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder that works with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Standard convenience features include push-button start, Apple Car Play, Android Auto, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning with steering assist. The 2022 Renegade Sport also gains a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen, which replaces the previous year’s 7-inch screen.
10. Subaru Crosstrek
Last on the list is the base 2022 Subaru Crosstrek, the second vehicle on this list to offer AWD as standard on the base model. Unlike the Kia Seltos, however, AWD is standard across all trims of the Crosstrek. The base Crosstrek also comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission; pairing a CVT with the base four-cylinder engine adds $1,350 to the price. It also adds Subaru’s EyeSight suite of advanced safety tech, which includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and hands-on lane centering, and increases the combined fuel economy rating to 30 mpg from the manual transmission’s 25 mpg. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on all trims.
